due to daily PM's regarding my dash conversion into my corolla ive decided to post it up in FAQ. Ill start by saying that my dash has NO air, aircon, heaters, power windows, mirrors etc. this is just how to get the dash shell to fit into the car. an auto sparky could prob help you with the above if you wern't sure yourself.

I got my dash out of an old half cut someone had just done a conversion with. he was kind enough to give us his halfcut in return for us taking it away for him. Although, when u see how easy this is, they might start costing big $$$$$!

once the /cut was home, i started by removing all of the heater boxes and unwanted crap out of the half cut till there was only the shell of the dash left. romove this, glovebox, console and all from the halfcut and then earn $2.20 when u take it to the scrap metal yard. Assuming u have all of the AE82 dash etc removed, then your right to continue.

on the 101 dash, there are is two long air vents that run along the back of the dash. (closest to the w/screen). take the vents out and mark a line along the back of the dash so that the line passes through the furtherest part of the hole. to mark the hole, use the 'old' finger gauge where your finger follows the shape of the dash while still keeping a parralell line on the dash. Cut on this line using a 5inch grinder with a standard cutting wheel on it. the waste should be approx 40mm.

what you are left with is what seems to be only one long edge for which to clip your vents back in. don't worry as your w/screen becomes the other edge once the dash is in place. in your '82 you should be left with just a rusty metal bar. bring the new dash in and put it into place. once you are happy with the position, making sure it go's back far enough so it runs even with the pinchweld on the door frame, and it's level, grab your best mate, the zip tie, and go to town. Zip tie everything you can as the more you tie, the less it rattles. i had to make two small brackets for either side on the bottom corner.

I THINK, you use the 101 glovebox cross bar. bolt this in along with all the other little clip in pieces etc. The cluster in mine only lights up and has no tacho, fuel, or any other instruments except speedo. 51RLO wired the lighting up for me so i will see if he wants to post up how he did this. the speedo in the 101 is electric, so you will need a 101 sender unit. take the speedo cable out of your 82 along with the mechanical sender and bolt in the electric one and run the wires to the cluster. clip the cluster in.

The only other hassle was the ignition barrel. i can't exactly remember what we did hear, but i know we had to cut the steering lock off it, and remount it off the steering column. that way it comes through the factory 101 hole. I used the '82 console that covers the handbrake. i had to modify this by trimming some plastic off the side, but its a bit hit and miss...i went through 3!! to finish it off, i put a black sticker across my w/screen so you couldn't see the foam from the cut.

THIS IS A VERY SHALLOW DESCRIPTION OF HOW TO DO THIS AND YOU WILL NO DOUBT COME ACROSS A BIT MORE CUSTOM WORK TO COMPLETE THE JOB. I WASN'T SHOWN HOW TO DO IT, I WAS ONLY TOLD IT FITS, SO THERE IS A BIT OF TRIAL AND ERROR. PLS DON'T HOLD ME RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY MIS INFO IN THIS THREAD.

I apologise for the lack of pics, but i didn't think to take any more.

oh yeah, thats right, the front window winders will only rotate all way round with the door open, otherwise they hit the dash. Shai ran power windows to combat this but these are not cheap and depending on the condition of the wiper mechinism, may not last long.

As i said, this dash was only meant to look the part , not work 100%. I was aware of this and am happy with how my conversion ended up. esspecially as it cost me nothing. :D

eviltwin, not that i am aware of. you would be lucky if anyone notices it to be honest, only a few people picked it at the jamboree. I was quite pissed off, cause its one of the best mods on my car but cause it looks like its meant to be there, only the people in the 'know', will know!

eddie, we thought this would be possible as well but as i have never had air, steer etc ( we removed all that to make the engine bay look better), we never bothered to look into if it would work 100%. obviosly it does and you have done a very tidy job of it. the best bit is, from your photo, i couldn't tell what car it is in! ;)

hey there all

with engineering i dont see a problem, i have told my engineer and he dont care, as long as everything works and does what it has to eg. defog front windscreen

only thing i would say that wouldnt let it pass is if u dont put eletric windows in as u have to open the door to open or closer a window with the dash in (even tho i done that for about 6 months) hehehe

even we i got defected for the motor the coppers didnt say anything about it except they done me for exposed wiring (had a kick panel off and no gear stick suround on) and no window winder on the door (cause i didnt have the hole covered) i even showed him it was electric windows, stupid coppers

hope this helps

Eddie

all good points, but i fail to see why it is a legal thing to be able to wind your window down, to me, thats your own choice.

If the Ae101 dash bolts in perfectly, would the AE92 dash aswell? i thought the AE101 was a wider car then the Ae82, it appears not <_<

hey there,

the ae92 dash most proberly will fit in, the ae101 is wider but it just fits in nicely into the ae82, but sticks out abit to much and electric windows have to be fitted as the orignal winders will hit the dash......

Hey,
nice work on that, once I figure out which model I have (it says ae82 on compliance) I might look into this, really looks good.

How long did it take you to complete from removing original ae82 parts until say you can drive the car again?

Doo eeet!

Plus, I have an AE92 dash in my Seca if anyone wants it, it's still installed, so it's got everything you need (plus an SX cluster with the extra gauges).

Does this work with AE101 Levin dash's or is this only for local AE101's?

I have a 93 Levin half cut with a decent looking dash id like to trasplant.

Cheers
