jump start the car or fit a battery for testing purposes if the problem continues your alternator is probobally shagged

Hey mate thanks for the reply
yeah ive tried a new battery in it, but light is still on
would an alternator from a 1.6 engine fit my 1.4 engine?
how much you reckon for a new alternator or a second hand one?
thanks again.

I take it you have a Nova? The 4afe 1.6 alternator will be a better bet than the 4age 1.6, the 6afc alternator shouldn't cost that much from the wreckers. Use a multimeter from terminal to terminal on the battery (with a new/charged battery of course so the car starts) and tell me/us what the voltage is, should be around 13 if the alternator is ok, give it a rev and put high beams on and note if the voltage starts to permanently drop.

Had this problem with my old sx, lucky for you, mine was a gze and cost $300 to get rebuilt with a few new and s/h goodies. Yours should be a bit cheaper I imagine! Good luck.

sounds like the voltage regulator, 6a should be the same as 4afe/c you can easily change them for about $30, they sit on the back of the alternator. held by 2 screws. had them go on a few rollas/novas

As fandio suggested, most common cause of this is the regulator in the alternator...

Is there any ignition lights?

My car had the same problems, car wouldnt start and battery light was on. Try replacing your 8A or 4A fuses where the red (positive) terminals are. You'll have to unscrew them from behind to get them out.

Basic way to check if your alternator is charging is to get a screw driver and put it up against the alternator pulley and see if its magnatised , only while car is runnning..If its not mangatised obviously means your alternator aint charging and the regulator is poo poo.. Try hitting the alternator firmly with a hammer or shifter to get it going again. " it works"
