Im guessing i should really strip the paint off and start from bare, if so, What grit paper do i finish the bare metal with, what primer should i use? basically what would be the general process. And ultimately what type of paint would you recommend and how many coats would i need.
Also the front bumper is bare black, so i want to repaint this as well, is there a special primer i should use and just use the same paint as the guards? Also, should i give the bar a hit with sandpaper before i paint, or just make sure its nice and clean.

But sand paper 400 and do it wet.. Don't need to go back to metal tho, just take enough off it to rough it up enough for the new paint to stick, use prep wash in between.
If you don't care how it looks go ahead and do it yourself.

if the paint surface is fine , just use 800 to take all the shine off the surface , prepwash it and paint it..
red is not the best base to spray white over , but it will cover..
just get some 2pac solid in your paint code , and just put a few coats of that on, and thats all..
no need to clear it as the 2k solid has the gloss...

what a load of bullshit! i used cheap gear and acrylic paint in my old shed and got a finish that is better than new holdens come with. no experience and self taught.
I'd recommend just using acrylic, its what your car came from the factory with anyhow. Its cheaper, not going to kill you if you inhale fumes by accident and easier to fix up if you screw up. if you stick to a plain non metallic colour then you don't need clear. you will need to give it a 2000grit rub back and buff afterwards though.

i agree! i gave my '91 liberty a respray with acrylic last weekend and all it needed was a quick rub back [i used 1600 i think] i'm yet to have it buffed, and people are asking me 'how much did cost to get a pannel beater to do it?' there was little sanding back and the total time i spent was less than 10hrs.
best thing about it thou, was the cost.
if you have a steady hand and an eye for detail, give it a go. it's also great fun too.

Some of you may remember how a year or two back, a painter mate of mine commited suicide - I was offered all his gear for virtually nothing - I took just about everything EXCEPT anything 2pak
Ps Before anyone asks - I won't do painting for anyone - be just my luck to stuff up If I did something for someone else

I cant paint so I have all mine done in a booth in 2K.
It's way better paint it just shouldn't be used by people in the sheds.
