Hi guys, just wondering, i'm going to need to respray the front guards on a car, what type of paint will i need to do the job. Both front guards are going to still have the stock paint on them, both are factory red while the rest of the car is white. One of the guards will need replacing but, and that will be another colour.

Im guessing i should really strip the paint off and start from bare, if so, What grit paper do i finish the bare metal with, what primer should i use? basically what would be the general process. And ultimately what type of paint would you recommend and how many coats would i need.

Also the front bumper is bare black, so i want to repaint this as well, is there a special primer i should use and just use the same paint as the guards? Also, should i give the bar a hit with sandpaper before i paint, or just make sure its nice and clean.

It'd be quicker and easier to take this to a shop and get it done...

But sand paper 400 and do it wet.. Don't need to go back to metal tho, just take enough off it to rough it up enough for the new paint to stick, use prep wash in between.

If you don't care how it looks go ahead and do it yourself.

highly disagree with you there! 400 is just too rough. i would recommend somewhere between the 800/1200 area

yeah , 800 grit is what you'd use...
if the paint surface is fine , just use 800 to take all the shine off the surface , prepwash it and paint it..
red is not the best base to spray white over , but it will cover..

just get some 2pac solid in your paint code , and just put a few coats of that on, and thats all..
no need to clear it as the 2k solid has the gloss...

you can get plastic primers to promote adhesion on plastic bumpers etc..i would recommend using this (instead of normal primer) on your bumpers.

what a load of bullshit! i used cheap gear and acrylic paint in my old shed and got a finish that is better than new holdens come with. no experience and self taught.

I'd recommend just using acrylic, its what your car came from the factory with anyhow. Its cheaper, not going to kill you if you inhale fumes by accident and easier to fix up if you screw up. if you stick to a plain non metallic colour then you don't need clear. you will need to give it a 2000grit rub back and buff afterwards though.

acrylic is rubbish ,who uses that anymore... other than tasmanians :P
2k all the way :)

if the paint on the bumper is in good cond. , just 800 and paint.. same as the panel....

Enamel is cheap, will most likely get that. its just a run around. the bumper is currently paintless. so will need a primer.

i agree! i gave my '91 liberty a respray with acrylic last weekend and all it needed was a quick rub back [i used 1600 i think] i'm yet to have it buffed, and people are asking me 'how much did cost to get a pannel beater to do it?' there was little sanding back and the total time i spent was less than 10hrs.
best thing about it thou, was the cost.

if you have a steady hand and an eye for detail, give it a go. it's also great fun too.

cool, i'll probably go with the acrylic then, i'll only need a little bit, and i'll use a pressure pack can of that plastic primer on the bumper, its going to be funny having a mint paintjob on the front end of my car, and crappy at the back.

SURE GUYS USE 2 PAK IF YOU WANT TO DIE!!!! 2 PAK PAINT IS ISOCYANATE CURED THIS MEANS IT IS CYANIDE BASED YOU KNOW THE STUFF THEY USED TO EXECUTE PRISONERS WITH. WHY DO YOU THINK SPRAY PAINTERS LOOK MORE LIKE ASTRONAUTS THESE DAYS THOSE FULL COVER SUITS MUST BE DAMM HOT BUT THEY PUT UP WITH IT FOR A REASON. SURE SOME OF YOU WILL SAY IVE USED IT BUT DO YOU KNOW IT IS A CUMULATIVE POISON THE MORE YOU USE IT THE SICKER YOU GET TILL YOU DIE IN AGONY. EITHER USE ACRYLIC OR PAY SOMEONE TO DO IT.
CARS THAT LOOK GOOD ARE GREAT BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE AROUND TO LOOK AT EM REGARDS STEVE

I'm no whizz as a painter - I am self taught (just from experience) & class myself as a hobbyist painter. I have owned my own painting gear for probably in excess of 30 years but I refuse to use anything but acrylic - the beauty of it is there is no overspray outside of a foot or so & acrylic is touch dry in a few minutes. You don't have to be in an enclosed area & unless it's metallic you really don't need clear. Once painted a car with enamel - everything in the shed was covered in overspray -never again. You can aim the gun at something/someone say 4 feet away & all that will go over it/him is virtually dust - plus there are no toxic fumes. The hardest part about painting is the preparation. With the best painter in the world - job will still look like s##t if it hasn't been properly prepared.
Some of you may remember how a year or two back, a painter mate of mine commited suicide - I was offered all his gear for virtually nothing - I took just about everything EXCEPT anything 2pak

Ps Before anyone asks - I won't do painting for anyone - be just my luck to stuff up If I did something for someone else

Acrylic is the DIY painters best friend.
I cant paint so I have all mine done in a booth in 2K.
It's way better paint it just shouldn't be used by people in the sheds.
