There are only three months left until the sixth running of the 2009 Mt Buller Sprint on December 4 - 6, and already over 80% of the 100-capacity field have claimed their place in the annual race to the summit.

Run over a sixteen kilometre closed road from the foot of Mt Buller in north-east Victoria to the Resort township on the mountain’s peak, the course contains more than 132 different corners separated by short bursts of straight and cambered tarmac, all taken under tyre in less than 10 minutes.

The Mt Buller Sprint is open to both Classic cars (pre-1982) and Modern cars (1982 onwards), ensuring a great mix of different rally and race cars making the climb every year.

This year’s entries so far include cars such as the Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911 RSRs and 996 Turbos, classic and modern Holden and Ford V8s such as the Capri Perana and LJ Torana, American muscle like the Corvette Z06, a gaggle of Nissan, Subaru and Mitsubishi AWD saloons, and even a Mazda3 Diesel.

Some of the fastest cars to tackle the mountain have already gained entry to the exclusive ‘Sub-Nine Club’. Sponsored by TARMAC Magazine, only two of the ten trophies symbolising entry to this exclusive league of speedsters remain up for grabs this year.

This year, the sprint moves from the Melbourne Cup long weekend to Friday 4th – Sunday 6th December to make use of optimal summer alpine conditions and avoid other event conflicts. Day one, Friday December 4, kicks off the weekend with a shakedown and prologue utilising the final 2.5km of the full course to enable competitors to get a feel for this unique road.

Over Saturday and Sunday, the drivers have a minimum of four full runs each day to hone their skills and shave their times, with the worst run dropped in final results to tighten the competition even further. Last year, efficient time management and tireless work by the Sprint’s dedicated officials enabled 11 stages to be run over two days, to the delight of spectators and competitors alike.

And for the first time in Mt Buller Sprint history, a new thoroughbred touring section will offer enthusiasts the chance to experience the fabulous Summit Road in their own road car inlosed-stage rally conditions. Touring competitors will travel behind the swift pace car twice each day of the rally, then park at the Classic Car Show in the heart of the Mt Buller village and watch the competition cars come through.

The Touring section is open for 30 entrants and standard road cars for the bargain price of $350, which includes a AASA licensing permit and insurance, official car signage, and entry to all official rally functions and the Sprint’s famous social scene. All you need to bring is your helmet.
