Well I have to tell the story first – will try and break it down as much as possible to the critical points I factually know about… then I would like some thoughts as to what you guys think is wrong….I just need to consider whether I continue or possibly part the bike out (I don’t really want to though).
Purchased a non-running (no history of bike) 1986 GSXR 1100, from a guy who was moving, who had purchased the bike from the previous tenant of the villa (bike was sitting outside – no cover for maybe 2 years or so). Bike not stolen..
I took out plugs – poured in some oil – hooked up a battery and turned it over – it was quite tight for a week or so – then loosened up – compression over 100psi on cold cylinders.
It needed replacement carbs as someone had already had a play with the originals (parts missing). Replacements carbs purchased, checked and OK.
Was going to check the valves etc and make sure oil was good, but someone else decided to put some fuel in first and start it..
Bike started just as I arrived, and ran for about 15-20 seconds – just starting to come onto 4 cylinders, when it stopped suddenly with a “shreek” – person starting it said “that’s’ fuct” and pushed it back against a wall – devastated was not what I was thinking.
Asked same person to pull the rocker cover and see if it was valve train related – nipped journal broken cam – no oil etc etc..
Well that was 18 months ago…I finally got the chance to have a look at it myself yesterday and have the following information..
Plenty of oil in motor (clean – and proper level). Rocker cover off and both cams and all journals appear good – very little wear on cam lobes – Inlet cam shows 27A stamped on it.
Removed spark plugs (2 squirts of oil down cylinders again)
Removed signal generator cover to access nut on crank ( it has 27A stamped on it as well) to try and turn it over by hand.
Was able to turn it by hand with reasonable effort (not Gorilla strength) BUT it has a really “notchy” feel when turning it with a ratchet, and during revolutions it gets a bit stiff in a few places. Rotates forward and backward – you can hear the starter motor engaging when you turn it backwards..
All valves going up and down freely. Put screwdriver down cylinders all going up and down when turning the motor by hand.
Cam chain - no slack at all.
Can look into the oil filler neck and clutch basket is rotating OK –
I have a feeling a bearing of some sort (maybe in the gearbox) has collapsed ??? any other thoughts ??
I have great faith in your responses…
I know its going to cost me money – just making a decision is the most critical part for me now..

Sorry, love to help but you obvioulsy know a truckload more than me about bikes. You lost me at at replacing carbs!!

hmmm my limit as to how bikes work is that u hit the go button it go's ........

Doesn't sound good at all. Seems like you've done the usual suspects from that kind of problem. If it was me with a bike with that history I would pull it down and do a rebuild on both engine and 'box. Until you do something like that you don't know if it may have been a journal bearing or something severe in the bottom end or 'box. Good luck!
