So its been starting to get hot around Adelaide recently and iv noticed the temperature gauge going higher and higher but the thermo fan never turns on? When should it come on and why wouldnt it be coming on? the temp gauge goes a little way above half in heavy traffic.

Also is there a special type of coolant i should use? Just average motor coolant that's designed to be safe for aluminium?

Mine rarely ever came on. The first time it did I thought the motor had s##t itself until I realised what the noise was. If you want to test it just hook 12v up to the fan wires to test it is working. It is also possible that the temperature sensor controlling the fan isn't working but until the motor gets almost to the red without the fan cutting in I wouldn't stress too much. Just remember that if it does approach the red and the fan doesn't cut in pull over and let it cool down for a while. Much better to be 5-10 minutes late than blow a motor. As for the coolant I jusr used on that had corrosion inhibitors and was safe for alloy heads.
