The across has been running great lately apart from a worn tensioner which i havent got around to yet.
But yesterday while going along a bumpy road it started wanting to cut out, if i throttled it would bog down and die, if i lightly throttled it would stutter and not really go anywhere. Had a look at the engine area. spark plug lead on cyl 1 basically fell out when i touched it, then when i picked it up it fell out the coil too, cut off ends and screwed back in, kept going for a short way then cut out again. I was in Bridgewater trying to get to Mitcham on Sunday which was 42 degrees and i was fully kitted up so i wasnt waiting for help. But i made it back, constantly having to stop. Coasted down from the top of crafers all the way down to belair road, then down to goodwood road, starting the bike once of twice. Nightmare.

What could be the problem? Iv checked all plugs and i have spark. It does seem like a fuel problem to me. But i dont know much about carbies, iv only replaced the throttle slide holders so far.
Oh after full repairing all plug leads it started but was blowing out tons of black smoke, then wouldnt start. Only occasionally backfiring or shooting a flame.

To put it simply. Bike turns over but wont fire, checked all plugs, sparks fine, started this morning but puffing lots of black smoke, then wouldnt start, backfired once. Now nothing. Flooded? What should i try?

Have you checked carb floats? if not check them. Also take apart carb and make sure there is no gunk stuck in or around jets and get some CRC Carb cleaner and give them a good clean out too. empty fuel tank out too and get new hose just to be sure.

Also check your needle position to see if it's at the correct setting (if it's adjustable) idk much about these carbs

Ill check the carb floats in a minute. I just realised i had filled the bike around 200ml to full of oil while checking for things wrong. Its strange i had left it for over an hour before checking the level, and it was down. So filled it up some more. Guess that was why it blew alot of black smoke? Still might be because one of the carbs is overflowed with fuel from it not being ignited? But anyway let the level back down to normal still no start. On my way to check the carbs innards.

And the classic adelaide.

Checked carbs everything seemed to be good, all clean. Checked the plugs again, cleaned them thoroughly. Now it sounds like it wants to start, its just almost there. But nothing but flames out the exhaust and a loud bang every few tries. Tried with the choke in all positions. Maybe i should replace ALL plug leads and ALL plugs again. I only change the plugs 10,000 kms ago. But leads may be toast.

What sort of lead should i use? Ill be getting a long peice and cutting them to size. Ill have a hunt on the forums.

SUCCESS!!! Cleaned the plugs well and truly, cut ALL leads both ends back 30mm re fit all leads pushing and twisting onto the terminals/coils/plug connecter. Took along time to want to start. By the time i got the choke in exactly the right sport that it would stutter my battery was giving up. Push started it in 2nd gear. Ran like crap for around 30-60 seconds. Then revved it to the red line a few times. Good as gold. Thanks for the advice/ideas SLMCAM. Now if anyone has my problems they know one place to start.
