Morning all.

tried various searches etc but of course got 100+ pages of results as "engine" "oil" "weight" and "gearbox" are mentioned in heaaaaaps of posts.

Just about to do a change of oils this weekend and wanted some advice.

From reading the post about more power from corolla from terra operative he stated

Penrite HPR30 (20w60 mineral) is fine.....just wondering what others use / swear by.

As for gearbox oil, 75w90 weight im pretty sure is what the go is, just curious i was thinking of getting one by Nulon which has the G70 additive already in it.

Now i know it depends on cars age etc for some slight variation on oil weight.

Car has 305k on it and engine was replaced at 200k so engine has done around 100k since 2001 and prior to going in the car would have to have had min 100k on it

found compression test docket from 2001 with showed 180PSI for all cylinders (ofcourse dont know how true that is)

Blind kid seeks says my engine is the quietest 4age he has seen re. little to no engine noise at all...nice and smooth.

Cheers all any info would be appreciated before i go purchase oil on Sat

Well if you searched, you'll see that similar threads to this have taken off about twenty times previously so everyone has probably said all they have to say on the matter.

I use penrite HPR15 or HPR10 if it doesnt burn away. Always have always will. Unless you have spent thousands on a 1337 engine in which case royal purple would be the go, but for a used 4AGE/GZE, penrite semisynthetic is good enough without being stupidly expensive.

Gearbox oil I use penrtie limslip 90, but I have an E51 LSD box so that is irrelevant to most people here.

Personally use Penrite HPR10 (10w-50) in my SX, good rep and not that expensive - rebuilt about 5000km ago...with just over 220,000km on the clock - so far so good, though oil pressure gauge tends to be at one quarter whilst idling and a bit above half during normal driving... not really sure if that's an issue

I have also in the past used Redline Lightweight Shockproof gear oil in box' - not 'totally' convinced it's worth the price unless your gearbox is like crunchy nut cereal.

Another Penrite person here. I just had the car serviced two agos using:
Toyota Platinum plugs
Penrite HPR10
Ryco Z386 filter
Also a coolant flush too

Penrite's good 'cause it's affordable and doesnt burn oil, not my engine at least. Holds up well and takes anything from track days to the day-to-day grind.

As for gearbox fluid: when I did the gearbox swap, I ran Castrol VMX fluid with tube of G70 addictive. That held up well for a solid 20k or so until I changed it to Motul LSD fluid about 5000k's ago. Again no issue and it's a 75W90 fluid.

I guess at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself what you'll be using the car for. I personally, wouldn't spend a whole lot on big/expensive brands unless it was seeing some sort of track/racing. For daily use, I'd go with fluids on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Hope that helps.

Another tick for HPR30, used it in the AE82 bigport, AE102 7AFE and ST162 3SGE with no problems whatsoever. Never had to do gearbox oil, so no help there though :P

im using hpr 15, just because its semi synthetic and my oil goes black after like 2000km, but so far hpr15 is still nice n gold after 1500.:) and its only like $1 more than hpr 30

If you could have bothered to look, any where any place, you'd see that recommendations are as numerous as assholes & opinions, and maybe figureout that it's almost impossible to buy something that is totally wrong.

I used to use GTX2. It did the trick just fine.

HPR15 was good aswell.

A 15-40 should be good, but go a 20-50 if she uses a bit of oil..

As for the gearbox: Castrol VMX 80 is good. Although i dumped Auto transmission oil in my old rolla gearbox as the synchros were a bit ruff.

Well I was running for my engine: Penrite 20-50 but I recently it has been going through lots of oil and it looks like a engine rebuild is on the cards. So I have just gone up to Penrite HPR 50 (the heavy duty stuff) and going to put that in my car for a couple of months while I save the money for a rebuild.
This was for a 1990 AE93 Seca SX btw.

Penrite Sin 10 (2,000 kms on engine)

For g/box have tried Redline MT90 and now have Redline shockproof in my notchy E52. Both feel the same to me which was way better than standard oil in helping the notchiness...

I've never used Penrite.
But been told about Torco being the new best thing to use in engine and gear box.

Penrite in all the motors ive ever touched... HPR 5 in my 2ZZ HPR 15 in my rebuilt bigport and HPR 30 in all my other 4AG motors. My dads merc 190e was using stupid ammounts of oil and he put his trust in me to do what i could to stop it from being so thirsty so i topped her up with HPR 50 ( thick as honey ) and placed a slick 50 treatment through it. Did the trick the car has not burnt an ounce of oil in it's 5k so very pleased.

All in all id never put something stupidly pricey or stupidly below the recomended weight in a 4AG motor changing the oil regularly is the key to a long healthy life for one of these engines.

just a quick question with those running an E5# series LSD.. they are a viscous LSD coupling are they not?? therebuy making them a completley sealed unit... and not affected what so ever by the gear oil that is in there..

well that was my understanding atleast... same as rear end nissan viscous LSD's.. just put bannana peel and vasoline in there if you really had to.. the only thing it's doing is lubricating the bearings and c/wheel & pinion...

you could get them with a viscous centre, open, or optional trd clutchpack centre

all us gzedub guys use penrite limslip 90 in all the e-series boxes, lsd or no. does the job

yep, just a majority seem to think that the viscous needs to have LSD oil in it... which i'm saying is completley not needed, and should be doing what some of the guys here are doing and running a thinner (VMX80) gear oil.. or even thinner auto oil (like Dex 3).. if the synchro's are a bit worn..

yep viscous lsds are sealed units and not serviced so no need for lsd oil...

i had dexron 3 auto oil in my gze lsd box n it crunched, put castrol vmx80 $35 in and its perfect no crunches...

use castrol magnetec 10w-40 engine oil

its not a race car lol, prolly burns a bit how i drive ;P and leaks from dizzy so not fussed on wasting money on oil when its not needed.

Nevermind i found a different one by same ebayer which covers pre 87.5
