What Products To & Not To use and procedures on making an engine to look new?

If you just want to clean it up, go to your local Autobarn, Supercheap, Repco and buy a can of degreaser. I spray that onto a cloth and wipe it around. Others spray the degreaser directly around the engine bay and wash it off. I don't do this due to the risk of getting moisture into the electricals.

What about steam cleaning? Or is that even worse?
