Hey, First topic.
This might sound stupid to you enthusiasts, however I am just looking for an opinion really...
After writing off my first car (1993 300sx) and insurance refusing to pay up, I was forced to buy an 1989 AE92 1.6L, I soon discovered this thing pretty much had less power than my mothers Kia.
So I thought to myself, are there any cheap ways of unlocking some cheap power?
I noticed that the air intake system for the engine seemed a little inefficient?
And was wondering whether i could modify it to receive more air with fewer restrictions and at a lower temperature? Surly this combined with say cutting the exhaust system a bit short, could improve the power just a little bit?
I was planning on butting out the top of the stock air box-thing and sticking a small scoop over the top of the hole i would cut out.
Then I would cut a hole out of the top of my bonnet right above the scoop.
I would then cut the bonnet infront of the scoop and bend it downwards to channel air into the scoop.

Here are a few pics to help give a view of the situation.

First off, that's the 4af (also know as the 4afc). My girlfriend had that engine in her rolla and it sounded mean under full throttle, I currently have the 4afe, which is the fuel injected version, only puts out about 100 hp. The performance engine was the 4age, and different gens have different power specs. With the 4af you can't really do much, and I had wild dreams of trying to create a quicker engine out of the 4afe but decided to head down the 4age path, firstly, much cheaper and secondly, it sounds awesome :)

But, if you want to stick with this engine, I suggest just the usual header, exhaust, plugs etc.

Again mate, not alot you can do. Sorry

Just one more thing though, what is the stock size of the throttle body opening?
Just the one that sits under the air filter?
Thinking of just replacing it with a mushroom just for the sound factor. (Ran without the filter during carby cleaning and it sounded great)

Yes you could but first, is everything OK, what's the compression, have you adjusted the valves, plugs & wires OK?

It is a carburetor.

:welcome:

WOW - that's a really restrictive air filter element !

Now your bonnet scoop idea isn't that bad an idea but remember you don't want any water shuffing into the carby when it rains.

If you can do a less restrictive pod filter set up (breathes easier) + the scoop, you'll then need to alter the mixture as more air will be flowing.

As said, a new set of plugs, leads, timing + say extractors & ummmm... a higher flowing catalytic converter & 2" exhaust + muffler should get the best out of it.

Hey Thanks guys.
Anyway I've ordered the things I need off of Ebay and picked up a new carby casing.
Going to see how this goes. (Still thinking of ways this will all line up,) But I'll UL some pics of how I do it, and see whether it was worth it.
Always fun experimenting with these things...

Experiment away, it's impossible to destroy these engines, my girlfriends had over 330k on hers before someone crashed into her and wrote the car off

you'd be better off doing a home port and polish job on the head, it can be done on the car

Should be the same laws and rules as in Adelaide. But if your gonna cut a scoop in, dont cut any of the bonnet supports out. Cut around them. If you cut them, you will be defected for it. Once you have cut out your hole, go buy some small rubber piping that you can run a slit down it and use it to cover over your sharp edges that you cut. Then make sure your scoop from the outside has mesh on it, otherwise it wont be legal.
