CARYEARMAKEMODEL?????????
If this is relating to a problem with 5th, it DOES NOT hold it in gear or keep it from popping out, it is for locating only and no amount of stretching/shimming it will do what you need.
The syncro hub teeth/dogs have a slight taper that forces it to hold in place when loaded. Yours are worn out or a bad bearing is causing misalignment.

5th gear dropping out is really common in cars owned by grannies that potter around in 5th, when it should be in 3rd or 4th. see it at work all the time. easy to fix with a few new parts.
